Karma, Who Needs It…
June 22nd, 2008 by thoughtwrong
This is a post about what is probably the most used word on plurk ever. Karma, who needs it? Well need is a strong word. Lets break this down. You need air. You need water. You need food, clothing, shelter, and SOCIAL INTERACTION! Sure karma is a nice thing to have, but why? To get some new emoticons? To change your timeline a little? All perks, and not useful in the greater scheme of things.
What is the point of Plurking then you may ask. Well, the answer to that is a simple one my friend. Its for the social interaction. Sharing your views on topics with others, and asking others what their views are in your areas of interest. I mean, if we are not here to communicate, but more to be the biggest and the best, then we have just threw the whole idea of social networking and social media out the window and replaced it with a game of king of the hill.
So I am asking everyone out there in Plurkland, do you want to meet new people and make amazing new friends along the way, or would you rather spend mindless droning hours trying to squeeze that last little bit of karma posts before it updates? Well my friend, that is up to YOU!

Well, people are catching on to the karma spammers and are starting to not follow them anymore, which lessens your karma. Therefore, people who karma spam will end up with less karma that folks who actually have interesting things to say!
I was really glad for that awesome little innovation. Great post ^_^

yeah, quality is key in Plurk, spammers get one chance and are then blocked, reducing their karma. it’s a great system so far!

You are articulating the “meme” that I’ve become aware of since becoming a plurk community member. The reason that none of this is a waste of time for those who choose to be involved in the deeper level communications, is the constant dialog on topics that don’t really have many constraints, and yet — beyond the first impressions — are sure to make the most difference to those who partake in those conversations. It’s a constant learning curve, and yet very ideal for a cross-section POV of some of the most important “intel” out there. One thing that’s becoming apparent (at least for me), is the idea of “authenticity” being directly related to why anyone would devote this much time or energy to anything at all in our busy lives. It seems that those who really DO have a reason to read and comment on what others are posting about, say clever and insightful things, just as a matter of course. And more, the tendency to learn something new quite often, as we do all of this together, is a 1-of-a-kind buzz. So at this point — after 2 weeks — I’ll admit to being plurk addicted. Yes, and also well connected, thanks to all of you. Thanks for the post CW!
