Managing your Timeline (Secrets to Success)
July 9th, 2008 by thoughtwrong
If you are anything like me and you have 60+ friends then you know how full your timeline can get. Now some people back-Plurk and spend 2 hours reading every response, and some people “Mark All as Read” and move on. Neither of these are very good scenarios, and sometimes can lead to important information being missed completely. This problem and what to do about it have plagued Plurkers for months and I think I have come up with a decent solution.
Keys to Sucess
Returning to your timeline after an 8 hour (or longer) work day can be stressful and sometimes annoying. What do you do with the insane amount of responses and new Plurks that have come while you were away. Here is my own personal management technique on how to successfully get back to Plurking with your Pleeps.
- Step 1: Click “View all Responses” and go all the way to the end of your timeline, there check for any familiar Plurks from the last time you were on so that you can recap.
- Step 2: Change your timeline to view “only your Plurks” and check for any new responses to your own posts.
- Step 3: Now change your timeline to “private Plurks only” and check for new PMs or responses.
- Step 4: Now I usually check my friend’s and interesting people’s pages. I have a list of people that I check up on often because I know they include fun and informative posts alike. My list consists of Amix, Plurkbuddy, and KDFrawg to name a few (there are many, many more).
- Step 5: Click the “View all responses” link. It will usually only show 250 responses at a time and they are all the latest ones available. Check at the bottom what time the first new response is at. For me its usually about 2 hours from when I first left. Click “Mark all as Read” and do this several times until you have one more rotation left.
- Step 6: At this point I usually have around 50-120 responses left over and that is a more manageable number to back-Plurk from.
This is my routine and keys to success on Plurk. I feel this Management technique, done properly, can get you through all your past Plurks and back into the groove of things with your Pleeps. If you feel your still missing something just remember, if its that important your friends will bring it back up in your timeline again.
Final Thoughts
Try to always keep at the beginning of the timeline as that is where most of the action is happening. Plurk is like a lot of Instant Messages on a timeline, and its a great way to communicate with people and have a good time. Don’t get caught up trying to keep up or you will lose.

Nice post thoughtwrong. A no nonsense approach that uses good common sense to get through the undaunting task of the unread responses.

great tips…I employ similar methods. Sometimes I just click on my friends’ profile so I can fully catch up with each one. I don’t feel as guilty for clicking “mark all as read” that way.

Thanks for an informative site! Is it my computer, or is there a glitch on your site — I had to scroll past your sidebar, way down, to see your post.
